Tanga Railway Station

General History

Tanga Municipality is located on the coast of the Indian Ocean, to the north of Dar es Salam. It is the administrative headquarters of Tanga Region. It is also a major gateway for imports and exports to/from Tanzania and her landlocked neighbours of Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The estimated population of Tanga at year 2002 is about 264,177 people.

Railway History and Operations

Construction of the Tanga-Arusha Railway Line (the Tanga Line) started at Tanga in the year 1893, during German Rule in Tanganyika. (1883-1919). The Tanga Line is the oldest railway in Tanzania. Tanga is a major railway depot station for train services to/from Moshi, Arusha and other stations on the Central Railway Line. The railway distance between Tanga and Dar es Salaam is 374 km .
