Tanga Railway Line

The Tanga Railway Line, commonly referred to as Tanga Line, starts at Tanga Railway Station and ends at Arusha Railway Station, covering a total distance of 437km. It is the oldest railway line in Tanzania. Construction of Tanga Line was undertaken in two phases. The first phase of the line was constructed during the German Rule in Tanganyika, starting at Tanga in 1893 and ending at Moshi in 1911. The second phase was undertaken after the First World War during British Rule, starting at Moshi in 1923 and ending at Arusha in 1929. Other important Railway Stations along Tanga Line include: Muheza , Korogwe, Mombo, Mkomazi, Makanya Kahe and Kikuletwa. The Tanga Railway Line is important for transportation of freight in northern regions of Tanzania; particularly for commodities like Sisal, Coffee, Cement, Clinker and Gypsum.

The Tanga Line also has an important branch line from Kahe Railway Station to Taveta, on the boarder with Kenya, where it joins the Kenya Railways system. With this link, the whole East Africa region enjoys services of a seamless railway system covering Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania.
