The Central line The Central Line stretches from Dar es Salaam, on the coast of the Indian Ocean to Kigoma, on the shores of Lake Tanganyika. It covers a distance of 1,254km. Construction of the Central Line was undertaken during German Rule of Tanganyika, starting at Dar es Salaam in 1905 and reaching Kigoma in 1914. The Central line is the main line for transportation of passengers and freight in the central corridor between Dar es Salaam and the western regions of Tanzania. It is also an important railway line for international traffic to and from neighboring countries of Zambia, Burundi, Rwanda , Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda.
