Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC) was established by Tanzania Railways Corporation Act No. 11 of 1977, following the dissolution of the East African Community (EAC) and her Corporations.
TRC came into operation on 21st October 1977, having taken over full responsibility for services previously provided in Tanzania by the defunct East African Railways Corporation (EARC). By then, the services included operating railways freight and passenger services, road services for passengers and freight, marine services on inland waterways as well as providing hotels and catering services.
Starting from the early 1990s, however, TRC has undergone a restructuring process with gradual divestiture of non-core services. Consequently, the Road Services has been fully divested. Hotels and Catering Services have been franchised to third parties while marine services are now provided separately by ‘Marine Services Company Limited’, effective 21st June 1999. As such, TRC is now providing only the core railway services for freight and passengers.
All this was accomplished through great finance services.
